Introduction by the Script Writer (Hara Tomohiko)This story orginates from a legend of the Japanese people, the story of Obasute from the Noh Theater and the story of Obasute which is made into a novel. The understanding that I perceived from the story of abandoning old people is as follows.
I wrote this story not from the point of view of the person who abandons but of the person who is abandoned. When someone is abandoned, what is his/her legacy to the society? In my case, I would leave a beautiful dance and the best theater which I have obtained during my life. Hence, the story of "OBASUTE" is written with the same motivation.
I set up this theater to be moving and at the same time entertaining, and an advance art but one that is written and based on the Japanese "KABUKI" tradition, which I have been playing for 30 years.
I hope that the audience will appreciate it and be entertained by this theater.

この作品は、日本の昔話としての伝説、能の演目「姥捨」、小説になっている物語などを題材にしています。
私は、題材の老人を捨てる話をこのように受け取りました。
人を捨てる側から見た話ではなく、捨てられる側からの話にしました。
人は、捨て去られるとき、あるいは一生を終えるとき、この世に何を残すのだろうと。
もし私だったら、生涯をかけて、ひとつでも美しい踊り、芝居を残したい。
そんな思いで創られた「姥捨」です。
３０年間歌舞伎役者として身につけた伝統力を基に、前衛的発想で面白くて楽しい芝居作りを大事にして作りました。お楽しみください。
